Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) says he’ll sit out the rest of 2017 following his hard-fought 12 round draw against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) last Saturday night on HBO PPV at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
IBF/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin was very upset at the post-fight press conference last Saturday night about his fight with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez being scored a 12-round draw by the judges appointed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
Golovkin thought he won a clear decision by 9 rounds to 3 or 8 rounds to 4. The most Golovkin could give Canelo was 4 rounds, as he felt he ran too much and was getting hit with jabs all night. Indeed, Canelo couldn’t stop Golovkin’s jabs from landing, and he was unable to stand and fight “Mexican style” the way that Golovkin was hoping he’d do. Golovkin said Canelo told him that he’s a real Mexican, but he didn’t fight with the Mexican style.
In a dramatic twist, the Mexican sensation, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (49-1-2) escapes with a Split Draw against Kazhakstan great Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0-1) on Mexican Independence Day, September 16, 2017. Setting aside the talent and experience on both ends, Alvarez also had the advantages of fighting on the most important holiday of his home country, the great promise of money from the Mexican fanbase in the potential rematch, and judge Adelaide Byrd giving him the dubious scorecard of 118 to 110. The other two judges had more believable scorecards, albeit perhaps closer than the affair actually appeared. Dave Moretti scored the fight 115 to 113 for Golovkin, and Don Trella had it 114 to 114 even.
Gennady “GGG” Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler is hoping that Golden Boy Promotions doesn’t make Triple G wait for a long time before they execute the rematch against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Golovkin and Canelo fought to a 12 round draw last Saturday night in front of a large crowd at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
While some fans saw the fight as a close one, the better portion of the boxing public saw Golovkin winning the fight 8 rounds to 4.
WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (25-0, 12 KOs) did enough to beat #5 WBO challenger Willie Monroe Jr. (21-3, 6 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Copper Box Arena in London, England. This was a really boring fight to say the least. I’m being kind here.
Last Saturday night, we got to witness a great fight between Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and Saul “Canelo.” Alvarez at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Where should we start? The scorecard, right? What can be said that hasn’t been said about it?
IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) weighed in at a trim looking 160 pounds on Friday in front of a huge crowd of 9,000 boxing fans for his fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) on Saturday night on HBO pay-per-view at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Canelo also weighed in at 160 lbs. at the middleweight limit.
A bloodied Milan Melindo did not have an easy night in making his first defense of the IBF junior flyweight title.
He was able to secure a twelve round split decision win over former world champion Hekkie Budler of South Africa in the main event of "Pinoy Pride 42" at Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu Saturday. Both fighters worked hard in each round, with Melindo giving it his all to edge out a lot of the close moments.
Light welterweight champion Terence “Bud” Crawford is siding with middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) to knockout Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) in their big fight on Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nevada.
