火星には独特の環境があり、気温は昼夜で激しく変化し、地球規模の砂嵐は一度に何週間も太陽を遮ることがある。地表は砂と砂塵で覆われており、玄武岩に似た鉄分の豊富な火成岩が浸食されてできたものである。
